Since 1991, The Food Project has built a national model of engaging young people in personal and social change through sustainable agriculture.  Each year, hundreds of teens and thousands of volunteers farm on 37 acres in eastern Massachusetts in the towns and cities of Beverly, Boston, Ipswich, Lincoln and Lynn.  The Food Project focuses on identifying and transforming a new generation of leaders by placing teens in unusually responsible roles, with deeply meaningful work.

Food from the farms is distributed through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs, Farmers’ Markets, and to hunger relief organizations.  The young people working in the programs participate in all of these distribution streams, giving them valuable job experiences and a personal connection to our food system and issues of food justice.

In addition, The Food Project helps others grow their own gardens through a variety of Community Programs and provides training resources.  It is a founding sponsor of the Real Food Challenge, which organizes students to increase the amount of real food at their schools.

The Social Action Committee organizes a “Serve and Grow” volunteer outing to the Baker Field Farm in Lincoln in the spring.  This Saturday morning event combines educational activities with a variety of hands-on farming tasks.  Watch for more information on the 2011 outing!
